Plotting your novel doesn’t have to feel like pulling teeth anymore. In this workshop, writers will learn about the plot points roadmap—the five major plot points in every story that you need to know before starting your first draft. We’ll talk about the three-act structure, why theme is the touchpoint for every story, how plot and character arc are intrinsically linked, and identify the five major turning points in every plot that keep your story on the right track to make it to the finish line (even if the story wanders a little in between). Writers who should take this workshop are include those who have a great idea but aren’t sure where to begin realizing it; those who fear the plot, those who are worried their story is just coasting on vibes; and those who know their characters’ deepest secrets and favorite breakfast items but can’t figure out what they’re supposed to do.

Lighthouse Writers Workshop 4-Week Class: Mining the Layers—Deepening Your Story

Register for this four week course HERE.

So much of writing is emotional excavation, carefully digging through each layer until we reach the bedrock of truth. In this four-week course, we’ll dig beyond the surface to find true character motivations and develop a richer, deeper story. We’ll learn how to mine character backstory to inform their present choices, how to more deeply explore theme during revisions, and how to use iterative writing cycles to layer in more texture and specificity. No story is written in a single draft, and it’s only through the process of writing, rewriting, and revising that we truly discover the heart of our story and our characters.

This class is best suited for fiction writers who have a completed draft and are looking for what to do next, intermediate to experienced writers looking to deepen their storytelling, and anyone who has taken Jenny’s previous introductory courses.
